Tagliacozzo:

















is situated at 730mt. of altitude, it's the most well known touristic centres in l'Aquila province, it's placed on the edge of the plain that in 1268 was theatre of the battle between Carlo d'Angiò and Corradino di Svevia.

According to an historian it was called Tagliacozzo because it cuts in half the gorge of the two high rocky mountains.



The town conserves many signs of its ancient history. Our itinerary can stars at Piazza Duca degli Abruzzi, where the church of Annunziata overlooks.



The memories from the past historical medieval and renaissance times are relived in the picturesque Piazza dell'Obelisco, where you can also see many ancient buildings, among which is the superb ducal palace, from the 300s, built on request for the Orsini family.



In the neighbourhood you can see the church of San Francesco and the connected convent; the church of the Santi Cosma e Daminano of the 15th century, the oldest one in Tagliacozzo: it dates back to the Byzantine era of the Greek monks of San Basilio, it is considered the Mother Church.



Very interesting is the Talia Theatre with its beautiful façade (XIX century), founded in 1686, in the rooms that were abandoned by the Benedectines in 1652.



Palazzo Ducale , built by the Orsini at the end of the XIV century, it's an imponent building with its elegant windows and the Renaissance loggia. It houses valuable medieval works and numerous frescos, some of which are attributed to Lorenzo da Viterbo.



Not far from the village you find the sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Oriente in which pilgrims venerate a Byzantine image of the Virgin. The church in which the Madonna is housed was seriously damaged by the earthquake of 1915, but it was later restored.
